Training & exercise

Give them a job or they take one

Long walks aren’t enough. Heelers need pace, purpose, and practice. Underemployed dogs don’t “settle” — they escalate.

Operating system

Four pillars that keep the peace

Blue Heeler working hard in open country

Pillar 1

Daily mileage

Not a stroll-around-the-block breed. Aim for vigorous runs, fetch with rules, bikejoring, hiking, or herding practice.

Pillar 2

Brain work

Nosework, tricks, obedience sequences, puzzle feeders. Mental fatigue is as real as physical for this breed.

Pillar 3

Heel instinct management

Nipping at heels is coded in. Redirect early with structured play and clear “off” language — never reward the chase of kids.

Pillar 4

Consistent leadership

Positive, firm, predictable. Heelers respect clarity. Soft inconsistency reads as an open invitation to negotiate.
