Origins
Forged on the stations
This isn’t a designer companion breed. It’s a tool that learned to love its handler — shaped by heat, distance, and difficult cattle.
Timeline
How the heeler happened
1800s
Built for Australian cattle
European herding dogs struggled in harsh Australian conditions. Stockmen needed a tough, biting heeler that could move cattle across vast distances.
1840s–90s
Dingo blood, deliberate craft
Breeding programs mixed collie-types with dingoes and other working dogs, refining a compact athlete with endurance, bite, and grit.
Today
From station to suburb
Still a cattle dog at heart — now also excelling in agility, disc, herding trials, and as a fiercely devoted family partner for active homes.
